Clicker Training your Border Collie
This simple method is proven to be highly effective, and with a little practice anyone can do it.
Start off by observing your BC. You are looking for a good behavior to reward. What we are doing here is training your Border collie dog to associate the clicker with doing something good. Whenever you click she knows it is for being a good or an obedient dog. Timing is crucial for training your dog and all dogs so practice is advised. The methods you will be using to train your dog to respond to the clicker are by clicking and immediately treating your dog. It does not take long to train your dog to realize that hearing the clicker means she will be getting a treat. This first step will help you throughout training all other behaviors because your dog will understand that the clicking sound equals a treat. C/T = click and treat.
Sometimes you will see me write “barnbuster” and that is my term for a big super-size treat. By supersize I am referring to a treat that is 7-10 ten times larger than normal. The barnbuster is reserved for when your dog is performing at an extremely high level, or is doing a trick flawlessly for the first time. Let him or her know that they are performing well! 1. Click and give your dog a treat. 2. Repeat this C/T about 35 times. This teaches your dog to associate the click with the treat. 3. IMPORTANT – It is important to stick to this rule: Never click without treating, and never treat without clicking. This maintains the connection between clicking and treating.
One exception to this important rule in teaching the “Come” command Trick #4

Border Collie Clicker Training
Teaching dogs to respond to this method usually takes several training sessions. At the end of each 5 minute session dogs tend to swing their head around when they hear the clicker sound. It is normal to have to train 7-10 sessions for the method to sink into your dog’s memory.
